Rules heroes held in exhibition game Ireland 6-8N SW Selection 3-17. IT wouldn’t be a stretch to suggest that the Irish International Rules squad would have much preferred to continue their celebrations in Sydney yesterday after the exertions of the past fortnight, rather than have to play a Gaelic football game against a representative team chosen after the recentAustralasian championships in Adelaide. But, they duly honoured their obligation, much to the satisfaction of New South Wales President Brian Deane, originally from Cork and Association President Nickey Brennan. In the event, the exhibition at Princess Park produced a game that was entertaining for a number of reasons, not least the fact that the home team performed impressively against a near full-strength Irish side, who ran in six goals over the hour. Nevertheless, it didn’t prevent the NSW selection (which included six players of Australian origin), from gaining a creditable draw. That came via a late equalising free from ex-Kerry minor Kevin Lynch from Castleisland to produce a 6-8 to 3-17 scoreline. The only negative was that Armagh star Aaron Kernan was hurt in a late tackle which resulted in him twisting his knee and an initial fear that the injury was serious. However, he was back on his feet a short time later, much relieved that he will be fit to play with Crossmaglen in the Ulster club championship next weekend. Scorers for Ireland: P Bradley 2-0; K Reilly, E McGinley, B Coulter and K Young 1-0 each; A Kernan 0-2, P Finlay, P O’Neill, S Cavanagh, J Miskella, K Donaghy and M Meehan 0-1 each.
